I tried to ask the Eloi, but they refused to answer and went away.
What are you afraid of?

I peered down into the darkness.
I can't see any water.

I threw a scrap of paper. It was once sucked swiftly out of sight.

Then I heard a certain sound.
It sounds like the beating of big engines.

Is it a mine down there or a factory? Is all work done beneath the earth? Is someone living in there?
