When the Eloi resumed their play I knew the answer.
The mankind has evolved into two different species. -- The Eloi who are kind and helpless and the other creatures who dwells in the dark beneath the earth.

These well-like buildings are in fact entrances for the subterranean creatures.

That was the kind of man-beast i saw.

But they do all the work for the weak and playful Eloi in their underground society.

Then I was struck by a new thought.
It must be these strange subterranean creatures who took the Time Machine!
