Harvey Mayo

Harvey's Time Machine models compared to each other:

Francois in Canada says on the Harvey Mayo warning pages on Don Colemans message board that "Harvey personalizes his creations. No two are alike. For example, the model that appeared in the many documentaries mentioned earlier combined elements from the miniature and the full-size model."

This fact is very valuable when to distinguish Harvey's models from each other. Now shall we see how many models Harvey Mayo created...
In some cases I got better versions of the images that Harvey Mayo sent to Borim.

Mayoholds.JPG (183857 bytes) Better version found of this image!

Model A: Made 1965 with a Tantalus box and currently owned by Bob Burns. It was of course already built when Bob paid $1000 for it. A crossing between the Wah Chang type and the full size type. This one has a hand-painted dish and a Tantalus box. If the blue ornaments on some pictures looks black, it depends on the quality of the color in the image. The distinctive feature on the model is the form of the dish ornaments and that the front of its wooden base is somewhat elogated comared to the other models.
Photo A1: Harvey Mayo (one with spinning dish) -- A2: David Hutchison -- A3: A screen capture Don Coleman printed so Harvey could take it to the autograph show and get Rod to sign it. It was taken from The Fantasy Film Worlds of George Pal. -- A4: is from the back of the music CD for The Fantasy Film Music of George Pal. (better version from Don Coleman, here cropped) -- A5: Don Coleman (who saw it on display at Filmcon 1) -- A6: Don Coleman. It was taken at Steve Stockbarger's home when he got it from Bob Burns for repairs. The batteries blew up and damaged the model and the tantalus and dented the wall! Bob said it sounded like a gun going off.

Model B: Wah Chang version with a Tantalus box ordered in okt 1997, for less than $5000 but higher than $3500, by Chris Perrotta when he lived in California, USA, and then sold via Ebay 2004 to Alan Nelson in Oak Brook, Illinois, USA. This model was lacking all the details when Chris got it in the first time in July 31 1998, as you can see to the left, and after much great trouble Chris finally got it finished 2003, as you can see to the right. This one has an unfinished console, the counterweight is white with a red hub and the dish ornaments are Wah Chang style. The yellow L.E.D. date lamp on the console doesn't light up.

Chris got the Tantalus box first in 2004, so until then he put the model under a glass-dome. And the box smelled like fresh lacquer the morning he picked it up! After Alan bought the model, Vince Winskunas built a Tantalus box for it. Chris still have the glass-dome and the Tantalus box that's in the pictures.

All photos: Chris Perrotta
B1 to B3: The yet incomplete model Chris received from Harvey Mayo in July 31, 1998.
B5: The Tantalus box in this particular image is just one he bought from eBay in 2000 or so. The one Harvey built for him was the first to go for sale on eBay shortly after he purchased this one.
B4 to B13: The model after receiving it back from Harvey Mayo in 2003 for artwork completion and other minor repairs many years later. Details are STILL missing, look at the console!
Also, Harvey didn't paint any designs at all -- that includes the patterns on the dish -- he simply rubbed it on. He used "rub-ons", which are like decals but instead of using water to free the decals from their release paper, rub-ons are directly burnished or "rubbed" on from the backside of release paper and directly transferred onto a surface. Essentially, they are made out of a special flexible printing ink that has properties to adhere to whatever surface they are rubbed on to. You'll notice Frank's machine (here below) has the exact same artwork on it. Chris Perrotta did give Harvey permission to use his art on Frank's machine as well.

Model C: was likely made after 1995 since the decals are transfers and Harvey had Don Coleman make the art work so he could have the transfers made. It was sometime after Don moved to Burbank which was 1995. Sold to a unknown client in London, England -- if he or she exist, in the end of 2004(?). This one has also fewer black stripes on the Time Generator end caps than other models.

Model D: Probably made before 1978. This one has a hand-painted dish and is a Wah Chang type. It also has a Tantalus box with a smaller knob than model A. Don Coleman believe Harvey made it for someone who worked at JPL in Pasadena some years ago.

Model F: A Wah Chang type with a Tantalus box ordered 9:th Juny 2003 for $6,500 by Frank Thetonia aka "frankie" in Marlborough, Massachusetts, USA. Frank got a 3/4 done mini model 2006, incomplete as it was, no rear pod decals, no rosettes, no lamp cage, no cages on the control panel, a warped dish, no red paint on shaft for lamp and a few other small missing parts. And still nothing of the Tantalus box yet...

Model O: Ordered 2010 by a guy called "Grey". In an insulting e-mail to me he says that he has the model but he can't proof it. He is bluffing and still waiting.
Verification points:

Model P: Ordered 2012 (or already in 2010) by a guy called "Ryan". In an insulting e-mail to me he says that he is waiting for the model. This guy is probably the same as "Grey" here above because of the same explicit language in both e-mails, but I am not sure. Only that "Ryan" is still waiting...

Remember that Harvey e-mailed Borim that he builds a model in only 4 MONTHS...

Result since 1965:
1 nice model
3 good models
3 Tantalus boxes
= 4 models and 2 Tantalus boxes.
And then:
2 uncomplete models
9 or 10 UNEXISTING models!
2 UNEXISTING Tantalus boxes!

Thanks to Don Coleman, Don Brockway, Chris Perrotta and Alan Nelson for the information and better images. Thanks to all photographer for the images. But I still need more info and images! Posts without names are not good enough, I need at least the first name an the state/country. I also want the facts verified with five (5) stars each if possible. Is the names, the dates, the cost and the type of models correct? Mail me as soon as possible!
